After intake of 5 teaspoons of traditional herbal medicine, a child was urgently hospitalized due to throat ulcer

According to baomoi.com, the doctors at Children Hospital in Quang Ninh province hardly rescued the child who suffered a throat ulcer caused by lead poisoning when using traditional herbal medicines.

The patient is a child named Nguyen Ngoc Diem M, 8 months old, lives in Uong Bi city, Quang Ninh province.

The was child hospitalized with high fever status, bad appetite, with the pain in the mouth which had lasted already for three days. Immediately, the child was transferred to the emergency department of the hospital for urgent treatment.

Dr. Truong Van The, from emergency department said, that due to patient history,  this child took 5 teaspoons traditional herbal medicine after that, the child had some symptoms: loss of appetite, tiredness,  pain in the mouth, sore throat, refusal from breastfeeding.

“After the clinical examination, we suspect that the child was exposed to lead poisoning and the blood lead test needs necessarily to be taken.  The doctor examination also showed that the  child’s health condition  was very serious and it was decided to  hospitalize the child was immediately  , and start an urgent  treatment.”

After implementation of some therapeutic activities, such as electrolyte recharge, antibiotic therapy, oral hygiene of  the child, so far, after a week of treatment, on the 2^nd  of March, the child’s health has significantly improved. The state of the uterine cavity and throat is more stable, the blood test has shown that the level of lead has decreased.

“The child was discharged from the hospital on the 3^rd of March, now the child’s  family is taking care of her at home”, Dr. Truong Van The, from the Emergency Department said.

According to Dr The, the process of establishing the diagnosis and the treatment of the little patient with lead poisoning  was difficult. It was necessary to combine the work many special departments such as: emergency department, infectious department , biochemical, hematological departments  to detect and to treat lead poisoning quickly and effectively.

The consequences of lead poisoning make the children to suffer physical and mental damages and it’s hard to recover. Even though the doctors found the diseases, the treatment is also very tough and requires long time.

Dr The said: “Although we have warned parents that this  traditional herbal medicine of unknown origin is toxic and lately has caused many cases of lead poisoning in  children , most of parents still give this medicine  to their children”.

A large number of mothers believe that this medicine helps their children to eat well, gain weight, treats some sore diseases, such as thrush, inflammation, diarrhea…
